A motorcyclist was severely injured when he ran a red light at a Normal Heights intersection Sunday and crashed into an oncoming car.

The 52-year-old rider of a Harley-Davidson motorcycle blew through a red light on westbound El Cajon Boulevard and struck the passenger side of a Nissan Altima coming off the Interstate 805 offramp shortly before 8 p.m. Sunday, San Diego Police Officer Dino Delimitros said.

The motorcyclist suffered an open fracture to his left ankle, Delimitros said. The 33-year-old woman behind the wheel of the Nissan was not hurt.
