A 54-year-old man was fatally struck by a car as he dashed across a National City roadway outside of a crosswalk, police said Thursday.

The victim suffered major head trauma and other injuries in the crash on westbound Sweetwater Road near Prospect Street around 11:45 p.m. Wednesday, according to National City Police Sgt. Chris Sullivan. He later died at a hospital, and his name was not immediately available.

The 22-year-old man behind the wheel of the 1999 Honda Civic that struck the man was not injured in the crash, and was not suspected of driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol, according to the sergeant.

Authorities said the victim was a transient.
