A 30-year-old National City man was behind bars Monday after allegedly fighting his way into a home in Carlsbad and threatening the residents with a large kitchen knife.
Carlsbad Police were first alerted to the suspect, identified as Alejandro Gutierrez, after he approached someone in the 1700 block of Nerine Way shortly before 12:30 p.m. Sunday and claimed he was being followed, according to a police statement.
Bystanders told responding officers Gutierrez had gone to a home on nearby Lilium Way and fought with a resident trying to keep him out. Officers arrived at the home to find the family locked inside a bedroom.
The residents told authorities that Gutierrez was possibly armed with a gun, although one was not recovered, and had threatened them with a butcher knife, according to the statement. Police were eventually able to escort the family out of the home.
Gutierrez was arrested after he emerged from a second bedroom attempting to flee. He was booked into jail on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon, burglary, brandishing a weapon, resisting a peace officer and attempted escape, according to Carlsbad police and jail records.
