A man who drove a car into a U.S. Marshals Service vehicle as authorities tried to arrest him and his girlfriend outside a Point Loma motel nearly two years ago was sentenced Thursday to nine years in state prison.

Michael John Taylor, 29, pleaded guilty to assault with a deadly weapon on peace officer and other charges.

On March 12, 2014, San Diego police officers, state parole agents and members of the U.S. Marshals Task Force were staking out an area in the 2900 block of Garrison Street around 8 p.m. in search of Taylor’s girlfriend, Sulee Ann Winston, who was wanted on a fugitive warrant.

Both Taylor and Winston emerged from a motel, and Taylor got into a nearby car, authorities said.

As officers tried to arrest him, Taylor gunned his car and clipped a Marshals Service vehicle, injuring an officer’s back.

San Diego police Officer Brian Sanchez fired several rounds, hitting Taylor in the torso.

Sanchez and four deputy U.S. marshals were treated for minor injuries, according to police.

Winston, 30, pleaded guilty to burglary, auto theft and being a felon in possession of a firearm and was sentenced Thursday to eight years in prison.
