Two people apparently escaped serious injury late Thursday afternoon when the truck they were in plunged over the edge of a Kearny Mesa freeway overpass, landed on another freeway below and burst into flames.

The northbound truck crashed off the state Route 163 bridge above Interstate 805 for unknown reasons shortly after 5 p.m., according to the California Highway Patrol.

The vehicle came to rest in roadside vegetation and began burning.

The two occupants managed to climb out and flee before the truck became engulfed in flames, San Diego Fire-Rescue Department Capt. Joe Amador said. Medics took them to a hospital for evaluations along with a person involved in a secondary crash, Amador said.

The burning truck set some nearby brush ablaze before firefighters were able to extinguish the flames.

The accidents led to lane closures and caused heavy traffic in the area into the early evening, the CHP reported.
