A man was behind bars Monday, accused of beating his female roommate at a Clairemont Mesa home over the weekend, fatally injuring her.

David Charles Ashton, 62, was arrested in the 3900 block of Mount Everest Boulevard — in the same neighborhood where the deadly assault occurred, according to San Diego police. He was booked on suspicion of murder.

About 3:30 a.m. Sunday, someone made a 911 call from an apartment on Missouri Street in Pacific Beach to report that a 48-year-old woman had passed out and stopped breathing, said police Sgt. Brent Williams.

Medics took Regina Moore to a hospital, where she was admitted in critical condition with severe trauma to her head and left arm. She died shortly before noon, and detectives took Ashton into custody later in the day.

Ashton was being held at San Diego Central Jail without bail pending arraignment, scheduled for Wednesday afternoon.
