A motorcyclist was killed in an accident on Sunday in the desert on eastbound State Route 78, which prompted traffic to be shut down for a couple of hours in both directions of the highway between Scissors Crossing and Yaqui Pass in Borrego Springs.

The incident was reported at 10:44 a.m. on the eastbound 78 two miles east of San Felipe Road.

“It was a solo motorcycle with one confirmed fatality,” California Highway Patrol spokesman Robert Catano said.

The identity of the crash victim is being withheld pending notification of next of kin and an autopsy on the cause of death. The SigAlert was canceled this afternoon, and all lanes of the 78 are now open.
