Lifeguards Sunday recovered a stolen motorcycle discovered floating off the coast around Sunset Cliffs in Ocean Beach, but a search for a possible driver by divers proved fruitless and was abandoned.

San Diego police and San Diego lifeguards responded to a report at 1:49 p.m. of a motorcycle spilling oil into the water at the popular ocean viewing spot.

“The motorcycle was found in shallow water leaking fuel,” San Diego Lifeguard Lt. John Sandmeyer said. “It probably had been pushed over the side of the cliffs overnight. Divers searched for about 45 minutes before abandoning the search.”

Sandmeyer said the VIN number on the license of the recovered motorcycle, which was pulled straight up the cliff face with a cable, indicated it had been stolen more than a week ago.

Sandmeyer said fuel spilling out of the vehicle while it was in the water was minimal, estimating about a half-gallon of fuel leaked out.
