Chula Vista police announced Tuesday they plan to staff a DUI checkpoint over New Year’s weekend to nab drivers who overindulge and get behind the wheel.
The checkpoint will be in operation from 6 p.m. Saturday to 2 a.m. Sunday. Police did not say where in Chula Vista the checkpoint would be located.
DUI checkpoints have proved to be effective in cutting down on DUI crashes that result in death and injury, according to the CVPD.
Over the past three years. Chula Vista police have investigated 454 DUI collisions, which killed nine people and injured 215 people, according to the department.
In 2013, more than 10,000 people were killed nationwide in crashes involving drunken drivers.
Police advised drivers to download the Designated Driver VIP mobile app from the state Office of Traffic Safety, which lists bars and restaurants that offer a reward to thank designated drivers for planning ahead. App users may also order up a ride from Uber, Lyft or Curb.
Drivers caught drinking and driving face jail time, fines, loss of their license and other DUI-related expenses which add up to $10,000 on average, according to police.
