A suspected drunken driver was killed Thursday night in a wrong-way collision on Interstate 8 near Lakeside.
The possibly intoxicated driver, who was behind the wheel of a westbound silver Infiniti sedan, slammed into a Jeep in the eastbound lanes at Los Coches Road shortly after 8 p.m., according to the California Highway Patrol. One of the vehicles overturned in the crash.
The Infiniti’s driver was fatally injured, according to the CHP. There was no immediate word on whether the other driver was hurt.
The collision prompted authorities to close the eastbound freeway lanes for a time, along with the onramp from Greenfield Drive, authorities said. A SigAlert was issued and later cancelled.
