San Diego police publicly identified a woman on Saturday, who was fatally struck by a hit-and-run driver as she crossed a street in Clairemont.

Maria De Socorro Velarde Espinoza, 60, was struck by a speeding southbound black Ford Fusion while walking with her husband across Clairemont Drive near Hiawatha Way shortly before 9 p.m. Thursday, San Diego police Officer Robert Heims said. Despite aggressive efforts to resuscitate Espinoza, she died at the scene, Heims said.

Officers later found the car abandoned on Chippewa Court, Heims said. The car had front end damage.

Police have been in contact with the driver, who they described as a white woman in her 20s with a ponytail. She was 5 feet 4 to 5 feet 5 and was wearing a jacket and jeans. Officers have not yet released her name but said they expect to have a warrant for her arrest soon.
