San Diego Police on Friday were seeking a hit-and-run driver who fatally struck a woman crossing a street in the Bay Ho neighborhood, then ditched the car nearby.

The victim, who was around 60, was struck by a speeding southbound black Ford Fusion while walking across Clairemont Drive near Hiawatha Way midblock shortly before 9 p.m. Thursday, San Diego police Officer Robert Heims said. She died at the scene and has yet to be publicly identified.

Officers later found the car abandoned on Chippewa Court, Heims said.

Police described the driver as a white woman in her 20s with a ponytail. She was 5 feet 4 to 5 feet 5 and was wearing a jacket and jeans.
