Authorities sought the public’s help Friday to find whoever fatally stabbed a 32-year-old man near Oceanside City Beach.

The victim — later identified as Joseph Prince — was initially thought to have been struck by a vehicle along Wisconsin Street near South Meyers Street, but responding officers found him lying unconscious in the roadway suffering from stab wounds around 3:45 p.m. Thursday, Oceanside Police Lt. Leonard Cosby said. Prince died at the scene.

Prince became involved in a brief altercation with the suspect and was stabbed with a screwdriver, CBS 8 reported. It was not immediately clear what the fight was about.

Witnesses told police a possible suspect fled the area on a black beach cruiser bicycle. He was described as a white man of about 30 wearing a red baseball cap and blue jeans.

Anyone with information on the possible suspect was asked to call police at (760) 435-4428.
