Federal agents in a patrol boat chased down several smuggling suspects fleeing on personal watercraft in the Mission Bay area Thursday afternoon.
The brief water pursuit played out about 3:30 p.m., according to city lifeguard officials, who assisted by monitoring the situation in case any rescues became necessary.
The suspects, who were believed to possibly be smuggling narcotics, abandoned their water scooters alongside Mission Bay Jetty, said Lee Swanson, a spokesman for the San Diego Fire-Rescue Department. They were taken into custody by federal personnel shortly thereafter.
City representatives referred all questions about the detainees and the reason for the chase to U.S. Customs and Border Protection officials, who were not available for comment early this evening.
