A fire of unknown origin caused an estimated $50,000 worth of damage to a home near Colina del Sol Park early Thursday and left a family of five in need of lodging.

The non-injury blaze in the 4000 block of Winona Avenue broke out shortly before 5:30 a.m., according to the San Diego Fire-Rescue Department.

Crews needed about 15 minutes to subdue the flames, SDFRD Capt. Joe Amador said.

The American Red Cross was called in to help the displaced residents — an adult and four children — arrange for interim housing.

Investigators suspect that an electrical problem sparked the fire, which erupted in an attached garage converted into a bedroom, but were unable to make a conclusive determination due to the extent of the structural damage, Amador said.
