6 DUI Arrests as 2,100 Drivers Screened at Downtown Checkpoint

San Diego police officers took six alleged drunk drivers off downtown streets at a DUI checkpoint in the East Village on Friday evening.

Officers operated the checkpoint from 11 p.m. to 3 a.m. this morning in the 1400 block of G Street. More than 2,100 cars passed through the checkpoint, with 1, 135 motorists screened by officers. The department said 14 motorists were detained for further field sobriety tests, which netted six DUI arrests. Officers also impounded 10 vehicles.

The SDPD said the checkpoint was made possible by a STEP grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety as part of its “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” initiative.
