Lifeguards and a helicopter crew worked in concert Tuesday to rescue a hiker who plunged partway down a sea bluff above Blacks Beach.
The 41-year-old man lost his footing shortly before 2 p.m. while walking on a trail in the Box Canyon area, off the 9700 block of La Jolla Farms Road, according to the San Diego Fire-Rescue Department.
The man came to rest on a ledge above the shoreline, suffering from leg injuries. Lifeguards hiked up to him and put him in a litter, which was then hoisted into a helicopter hovering overhead, SDFRD spokesman Lee Swanson said.
The unidentified patient, who was conscious and alert during the emergency, was airlifted to nearby Scripps Memorial Hospital La Jolla.
The rescue took about an hour to complete, Swanson said.
