Hikers found human remains Sunday in a canyon in Pine Valley, an unincorporated area in Southeastern San Diego County.

The remains were found about 9:30 a.m. in the 24000 block of Japutul Valley Road, according to San Diego Sheriff‘s homicide Lt. Kenn Nelson said.

Sheriff’s deputies responded to the scene and confirmed the remains were human, according to Nelson. Homicide detectives are still at the location, he said.

The identity of the victim and the cause of death would await an autopsy by the San Diego County’s Medical Examiner‘s office.
