A passer-by found the body of an unidentified man floating in the San Luis Rey River on Friday.

The discovery just north of state Route 76 and east of Interstate 5 in Oceanside was reported about 9 a.m.

Officers went to the site and “could ascertain from the shoreline that the victim was a man and obviously deceased, and had been so for an extended period of time,” Oceanside police Lt. Matt Cole said.

Using a motorboat, lifeguards and police recovered the body, which bore no obvious signs of injury, and turned it over to the county Medical Examiner’s Office for identification and autopsy purposes, the lieutenant said.
