A commuter train struck and killed a pedestrian standing on the tracks south of the Old Town area on Monday morning.

The Coaster locomotive hit the victim, described only as male, in the 2100 block of West Washington Street about 10:45 a.m., according to the San Diego Police Department.

The accident forced a suspension of rail service in the vicinity through the late morning.

The San Diego County Sheriff’s Department, which is handling the investigation through its Transit Enforcement Unit, said witnesses reported a man standing in the tracks. The man did not respond to the train’s horn warnings prior to being struck.
