A drunken driver and driver’s license checkpoint in Escondido yielded three arrests overnight on Friday.

The checkpoint was in the area of Centre City Parkway and Decatur Way, said Escondido Police Lt. Justin Murphy.

More than 1,350 vehicles drove through the checkpoint and about half of those drivers received primary screening for sobriety or driver’s licenses, Murphy said.

Officers took a closer look at 39 drivers who were suspected of being under the influence of drugs or alcohol, or could not produce a driver’s license, he said.

One person was arrested on charges of parole violation, one for cocaine possession and one minor was arrested for having an open alcohol container, Murphy said.

Eighteen citations were issued, including six for unlicensed drivers and three for suspended licenses, he said.

Five vehicles were impounded and six were released to the owner or a designated driver, Murphy said.
