A predawn water main break forced a daylong closure of part of a busy street in Point Loma Heights Tuesday and left surrounding homes without functional plumbing.

Water began surging out of the broken 24-inch-diameter pipeline onto a connector ramp between Nimitz and Famosa boulevards about 4:15 a.m., according to San Diego Police.

It took utility crews roughly two hours to shut off the failed 53-year- old main, city spokesman Arian Collins said. Water continued to flow out of the main through late morning, however, as it had to fully drain before repairs could proceed, he said.

Southbound Nimitz Boulevard was blocked off between West Point Loma Boulevard and the site of the pipeline break. The city sent in “water wagons” to serve the roughly 15 residences left without water service, Collins said. The mishap also left other addresses, including several schools, with low water pressure.

The task of fixing the main and patching the roadway was expected to take at least until late this evening to complete, according to Collins.
