A man was struck and killed on Palm Avenue in Imperial Beach Saturday, just blocks from a San Diego Sheriff’s Department DUI checkpoint.
Witnesses said the pedestrian was crossing the divided roadway between Emory Street and 10th Avenue just after midnight when he was struck by a vehicle travelling west on Palm.
Deputies working at a DUI checkpoint at 9th Street heard the collision and responded immediately, but the pedestrian died at the scene, according to the sheriff’s department.
Jonathan Rojas, 24, was arrested on suspicion of DUI and gross vehicular manslaughter.
The name of the victim is being withheld pending family notification.
