The body of a male was found Monday in Ocean Beach in an area where authorities had been searching for a man who disappeared while swimming with a friend.

The body was recovered at the terminus of Orchard Avenue, said San Diego Fire-Rescue Department Capt. Joe Amador.

It was not immediately clear if the body was that of 23-year-old Brian Wilson who was reported missing shortly before 5:30 p.m. Sunday after becoming separated from a companion in the surf off the foot of Santa Cruz Avenue, according to U.S. Coast Guard public affairs.

“We can’t confirm or deny a positive ID until the medical examiner makes a positive ID,” said San Diego Fire-Rescue Department Capt. Joe Amador.

Wilson was swimming at an unprotected beach, Amador said.

A Coast Guard cutter crew patrolled the ocean in the area through the night, and was joined at daybreak by a helicopter and 45-foot response boat.

Lifeguards searched underwater and along the shoreline for Wilson.
