An 80-year-old woman who suffered a head injury aboard a cruise ship about 35 miles west of Point Loma was medically evacuated by a Coast Guard crew early Friday and taken to a hospital.

A Carnival Imagination crew member contacted the Coast Guard around midnight and said the woman was experiencing severe headaches and was nauseous after hitting her head on something, according to a Coast Guard statement.

Coast Guardsmen on a 45-foot response boat brought the woman to Shelter Island, where she was turned over to waiting paramedics, authorities said. She was taken to UC San Diego Medical Center in an unknown condition.
