A motorcyclist was seriously injured Friday in a crash in Escondido involving a minivan.

Officers dispatched about 5:30 p.m. to the 1300 block of South Hale Avenue found a gray Honda Odyssey minivan with front end damage stopped in a driveway and a Honda Shadow motorcycle down on the ground off the roadway, with its seriously injured operator nearby, according to Escondido police.

The rider was taken to Palomar Hospital, police said.

According to driver statements and evidence at the scene, police believe the motorcycle operator, identified as 59-year-old Steven Ray Smiley of Escondido, was riding south on Hale Avenue, approaching the entrance to a mobile home park.

The driver of the van, 35-year-old Escondido resident Rolando Baza Ramos, was headed north on the street and began to turn left into the driveway, but failed to yield to the motorcycle and steered directly into its path, causing the collision, police said.
