A nearly 2-month-old boy died from injuries suffered in a collision near Borrego Springs that also killed his 27-year-old mother, who was behind the wheel of the car in which he was a passenger, authorities said Friday.
Erendyra Fierro of Borrego Springs had been driving the 2013 Volkswagen sedan involved in the crash on Borrego Springs Road near San Pablo Road shortly before 4 p.m. on Thursday and died at the scene, according to the California Highway Patrol and the San Diego County Medical Examiner’s Office.
Fierro’s son, Javier Salazar, was airlifted to Rady Children’s Hospital after the crash, but succumbed to his injuries that evening, authorities said.
Fierro pulled the Volkswagen to the side of the road in anticipation of making a U-turn, but did not see a 2001 Dodge pickup approaching from behind at 50 to 55 mph, CHP Officer Kevin Pearlstein said.
The sedan turned into the truck’s path. The truck’s driver hit the brakes but was unable to stop in time and crashed into the car’s left side, Pearlstein said.
A 51-year-old woman who was a front-seat passenger in the Volkswagen suffered moderate non-life-threatening injuries, and the pickup’s 60-year-old driver sustained only minor injuries, Pearlstein said.
Pearlstein said the child had been properly restrained behind the driver at the time of the crash.
Neither alcohol nor drugs were believed to be factors in the collision.
