A man was struck and killed by an Amtrak train early Wednesday afternoon near Leucadia Oaks Park.

The pedestrian was struck by a southbound Amtrak train shortly after 12:20 p.m. in the 1500 block of North Coast Highway across from the park, sheriff’s Deputy Dawn Morabe said.

Morabe said witnesses reported seeing the man walking toward the railroad tracks as the train was approaching. The train operator honked the horn and activated the emergency braking system, but was unable to stop in time to avoid hitting him.

The man, who was not immediately identified, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Early reports said a Coaster train was involved, but it was an Amtrak passenger train. The San Diego County Sheriff’s Department was investigating the death.
