Emergency repairs to a freeway overpass in El Cajon snarled Friday morning traffic and prompted the closure of two westbound lanes of Interstate 8.
Large chunks of concrete fell from the Johnson Avenue bridge into the westbound freeway lanes around 6:10 a.m., according to the California Highway Patrol.
Authorities closed the two right westbound lanes shortly after because of concerns that the Johnson Avenue overpass’ structure was jeopardized.
Caltrans officials said the agency’s traffic cameras showed slowing along the freeway near Johnson Avenue and on southbound state Route 67 to westbound Interstate 8.
