A South Bay man peacefully surrendered to police Friday afternoon after a 2 1/2-hour standoff that started when he fire several shots into a house and then holed up inside his apartment.

The gunfire erupted in the 1500 block of Oleander Avenue in Chula Vista about 4 p.m. Chula Vista police Lt. Don Redmond said. No injuries were reported.

Officers tried in vain to get the alleged shooter, who was holed up inside his apartment at the 1500 block of Brandywine Avenue, to give himself up. The officers then called in SWAT team to take up positions in the area in preparation for forcibly entering his residence if necessary.

Family members described the alleged shooter as possibly suicidal, police said.

Police were working on getting other residents of the complex out of harm’s way as the special weapons and tactics personnel were en route, Redmond said.

Authorities closed the nearby northbound Interstate 805 exit as a precaution.

Shortly before 6:30 p.m., the suspect exited his apartment and surrendered peacefully, Redmond said. Officers planned to clear the man’s residence of any weapons before reopening traffic lanes in the area to the public.

The suspect’s name was not immediately available.
