Motorcycle thefts are on the rise in Oceanside, and the city’s police department warns owners to lock their bikes and park in a garage if possible.

The Oceanside Police Department there were 33 vehicles stolen in June in Oceanside, 11 of which were motorcycles, and motorcycle thefts are up across San Diego County.

Military personnel are especially vulnerable because of the number who purchase motorcycles and then park them near the base or at their apartment complex.

Police recommend the following measures to avoid motorcycle theft:

  • Always lock your motorcycle. Use good quality locks and chains.
  • Consider using good wheel locks.
  • Invest in an anti-theft/recovery device.
  • Park in a garage or parking structure whenever possible.
  • Ask the management of your complex to improve the lighting, build enclosed parking and add surveillance cameras.

Most stolen motorcycles are taken out of the country or stripped for parts and not recovered.
