A 29-year-old man who took $100 from a taxi driver in the Hillcrest neighborhood was facing robbery charges Thursday.
The suspect hopped into the victim’s cab on University Avenue near 10th Avenue around 8:30 p.m. Wednesday and asked if he had change for a $100 bill, San Diego Police Officer Robert Heims said. But as the cabbie showed the suspect the change, he grabbed the money from his hand and got out of the cab.
The taxi driver also exited the cab, but the suspect pushed him back so he could not retrieve his money. The suspect pushed the driver again as he was calling for help, causing him to drop his cell phone, Heims said.
Heims said the suspect ran off, but was arrested a couple hours later. His name was not immediately available.
