A driver in a stolen car led San Diego Sheriff’s deputies on a high-speed chase through La Presa, Bonita, Chula Vista and into San Diego, where he ran off the road early Tuesday and escaped.
The southbound white Toyota Camry came to a stop in the bike lane on Sweetwater Road around 3 a.m., and the driver got out and began walking away. But as a deputy pulled up behind the car, the man hopped back behind the wheel and took off, sheriff’s Sgt. David Toner said.
The deputy followed the Toyota from the vicinity of Paradise Valley Road and Worthington Street in the La Presa area onto Interstate 805, according to the California Highway Patrol.
The driver swerved off the northbound freeway and crashed the car near the transition to eastbound state Route 94, according to sheriff’s officials and the CHP.
He ran off with a female passenger, later identified as 19-year-old Roxana Covarrubias, who was quickly arrested on suspicion of possession of a stolen vehicle and conspiracy, but Toner said the driver got away.
Anyone with information about his whereabouts was asked to call the sheriff’s department at (858) 565-5200 or Crime Stoppers at (888) 580-8477.
