A bus taking children to summer camp caught fire on state Route 15 in City Heights Monday, but no one was injured.

Smoke was seen coming from the rear tire area shortly after 8:30 a.m., prompting the driver to pull over on the side of the freeway south of University Avenue, according to the California Highway Patrol.

Firefighters were sent to the scene, but the blaze was out by the time they arrived, a San Diego Fire-Rescue Department dispatcher said.

The 40 or so people aboard the bus exited safely and waited on the roadside for another bus, the CHP reported.

The bus was headed from Lighthouse Baptist Church in Lemon Grove to a Christian summer camp near Barstow, Fox 5 reported.

The disabled bus temporarily blocked one northbound lane, according to the CHP.
