Two firefighters suffered apparently minor injuries Tuesday when a fire engine crashed and tumbled down an embankment during a training exercise in a brushy open area just north of the U.S.-Mexico border.
The driver of the emergency vehicle was trying to back it up along a narrow dirt road near Paseo de la Fuente in Otay Mesa when one of its front wheels slipped over the edge of the adjacent slope about 9:45 a.m., according to the San Diego Fire-Rescue Department.
The vehicle overturned, rolled top-over-bottom at least twice and came to rest on its side, SDFRD spokesman Lee Swanson said.
A ground-ambulance crew took the injured men, who were conscious and alert following the accident, to a hospital. One of them was checked out and released by early afternoon, while the other was being held for six hours of precautionary observation.
“They’re going to be OK,” Swanson said.
The men are assigned to San Diego Fire Station 29 on West San Ysidro Boulevard.
