An investigation was underway Thursday in downtown San Diego after a man in his 20s was struck and killed by a freight train, possibly while attempting to perform a stunt.

The man was apparently trying to cross underneath a Burlington Northern Santa Fe train when he was struck on the tracks near the intersection of Market Place and West Harbor Drive, according to San Diego Police and the San Diego County Sheriff’s department. He died at the scene.

San Diego police were first dispatched to the scene shortly after 11:30 p.m. Wednesday, then called the sheriff’s Coaster/Railroad Enforcement Unit, which investigates all incidents along the 62 miles of tracks in San Diego County, authorities said.

A sheriff’s spokesman said the crossing lights and bells were activated and crossing arms were down at the time of the incident. Anyone with information was asked to call (858)565-5200.
