San Diego County Sheriff‘s deputies arrested a 32-year-old man Tuesday on suspicion of stealing spent grain — a byproduct of beer making — from a Santee craft brewery.

Twisted Manzanita Ales reported four separate thefts of spent grain with a total value of $2,150. The grain is usually sold as animal feed.

Deputies from the sheriff’s Santee Station conducted a surveillance of the brewery and at 5:30 a.m. spotted a suspect loading grain onto a pick truck.

William Aston, a resident of unincorporated El Cajon, was later arrested. Deputies said Aston, a convicted felon, was found to have an active arrest warrant for an unrelated case and also was carrying ammunition.

The spent grain was returned to Twisted Manzanita Ales and the investigation is continuing.
