A pair of small fires off Interstate 805 slowed traffic near Mission Valley Thursday morning.
Sparks from a malfunctioning vehicle may have started the fires off the northbound side of the freeway, north of Friars Road, around 5:40 a.m., according to the California Highway Patrol and the San Diego Fire-Rescue Department.
Both fires were later extinguished, a fire dispatcher said.
