A suspected drunken driver crashed a vehicle into a power pole at a Chula Vista intersection Tuesday, knocking out electrical service to hundreds of area homes and businesses.
The vehicle veered off northbound Oleander Avenue around 4 a.m. and struck the pole at the intersection with Montcalm Street, according to a Chula Vista Police statement. The uninjured driver was arrested shortly after the crash.
Power was lost north of Naples Street and west of Oleander Avenue, police said. As of about 8:30 a.m., 466 San Diego Gas & Electric customers in the Rancho del Rey, Eastlake and Otay Reservoir areas remained without electricity, according to the utility, which estimated that service would be restored by 4 p.m.
Police officers closed Oleander Avenue between Naples Street and Jamul Court while utility crews worked to replace the damaged power pole and lines.
