Three people were killed and several injured in a pair of unrelated crashes on Interstate 15 near Rancho Bernando on Saturday.
Just after 3 a.m., an elderly man and woman were killed and four others were sent to the hospital in a wrong-way crash on Interstate 15.
A 2004 Audi A4 traveling northbound on the southbound side of Interstate 15 collided with a 2004 Honda Civic, just after the Scripps Poway Parkway exit, the California Highway Patrol reported.
The 84-year-old driver of the Honda and a 55 year-old passenger were killed, the CHP said. Three other passengers and the driver of the Audi were taken to nearby hospitals with major injuries.
The 21-year-old driver of the Audi was later arrested for suspicion of driving under the influence, the CHP said. The crash remains under investigation.
Names of those involved with either crash were not be released pending notification of next of kin.
Then, just before 10 a.m., a white van and silver pickup crashed on the northbound 15 Freeway, near the West Bernardo Drive exit, CHP officers said. One person was killed at the scene and another was brought to Palomar Medical Center with non-life-threatening injuries, according to San Diego Fire-Rescue.
The cause of the second collision was under investigation, the CHP said.
