An assault in the Marina district left a man gravely injured early Tuesday.

Patrol officers responding to a reported fight in the area of Park Boulevard and West Harbor Drive, near the San Diego Convention Center, found the 31-year-old victim lying near a sidewalk shortly before 3:30 a.m., according to San Diego police.

“The preliminary investigation revealed that three male (assailants) battered the victim, then fled the scene,” SDPD Lt. Mike Hastings said. “It is not known what precipitated the altercation.”

Medics took the injured man to a hospital, where he was admitted in “extremely critical” condition with blunt-force trauma to his upper body, the lieutenant said.

Homicide detectives were called in to investigate the assault due to the victim’s poor prognosis. His name was withheld pending family notification.
