An investigation was underway Tuesday into a motorcycle crash that killed a 45-year-old Fallbrook man in Bonsall.

Witnesses told the California Highway Patrol that the victim was speeding on his 2010 Victory Cross Country motorcycle westbound on Camino Del Cielo approaching Camino Del Rey and was passing vehicles by crossing into the eastbound lanes shortly before he lost control around 7:35 p.m. Monday, CHP Officer Jim Bettencourt said.

The rider crashed and was thrown from the motorcycle. He then struck a mailbox and a tree, Bettencourt said.

The motorcycle was found 100 feet away from the motorcyclist, who died at the scene, authorities said. His name was not immediately available.

Bettencourt said it was unknown whether alcohol or drugs were factors in the crash.
