A 57-year-old man fatally shot himself Saturday when he was confronted by deputies sent to a Ramona home to investigate a trespassing report.

Deputies were called about 1:40 p.m. to the 600 block of D Street to investigate a call of a male trespassing at a residence, San Diego County Sheriff‘s Lt. John Maryon said.

Upon arrival, they encountered the man, who appeared agitated, Maryon said.

“As the deputies began to check the male for weapons, he pulled away from them and pulled a gun from his waistband,” the lieutenant said. “The male then shot himself in the head.”

The man was taken to a hospital, where he later died, Maryon said.

No deputies were injured and none of them discharged their firearms, he said.

The man’s name was not immediately released.
