Border Patrol agents at the Interstate 8 checkpoint in Pine Valley found two immigrants in the trunk of a sedan and arrested a 41-year-old American man on human smuggling charges.
The agency reported Tuesday that agents stopped a 2005 Acura RL sedan late Monday morning and found two men locked in the trunk and sweating profusely. The trunk had no internal escape latch and the men, both Mexican nationals, had no water.
The driver was arrested and faces federal human smuggling charges. The vehicle was seized by the Border Patrol.
During the fiscal year, the Border Patrol’s San Diego Sector apprehended 29,911 people for entering the U.S. illegally.
