More than 100 motorists were ticketed in Chula Vista over a seven-hour period this week during a crackdown on cellphone use behind the wheel, authorities reported Tuesday.
During the special enforcement effort, which began at 3 p.m. Monday, police stopped 179 vehicles, citing 64 people for talking on their phones while driving and issuing fines to 44 others for texting while on the road, CVPD Officer Brian Carter said.
Additionally, three dozen motorists were ticketed for various vehicle- code violations, including speeding, driving without a valid license, failing to heed traffic signals, driving on the wrong side of the road, having illegal window tinting on their vehicles and driving with headphones in both ears.
Also, one person was arrested for reckless driving during the operation, and another was taken into custody for possession of heroin, Carter said.
The patrol, part of National Distracted Driving Awareness Month programs, was funded by the state Office of Traffic Safety, in conjunction with the federal Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
