A federal grand jury on Wednesday returned an indictment charging two people with a Rancho Bernardo post office robbery in January.

Scott Howard Kimball allegedly entered the post office on Bernardo Center Drive on Jan. 21 with what appeared to be a semiautomatic pistol and demanded money from three Postal Service employees.

After obtaining about $1,370 in cash, Kimball fled to a waiting Ford Explorer, with Amanda Lee Garcia acting as the getaway driver, court papers allege.

Kimball, 49, and Garcia, 32, were identified as the suspects two weeks later, when police officers encountered the getaway vehicle and postal inspectors questioned its occupants.

The defendants are scheduled to be arraigned April 23.
