A man held off police and stayed barricaded in a building at the east end of Pacific Beach for 11 hours before finally surrendering late Saturday morning.
The suspect was later identified as Kevin McGuiness, 53, in media reports.
A SWAT team had fired what a reporter described as tear gas and rubber bullets at the end of the barricade, where the person had holed up inside a structure since the midnight hour.
Police were called to the location, in the 2900 block of Garnet Avenue, at 12:29 a.m., San Diego Police spokesman Frank Cali said. He would not disclose what the original call was about.
Garnet Avenue remained closed to traffic between Interstate 5 and Mission Bay Drive, cutting the major road link between Clairemont Mesa and PB.
Reporters at the scene said tear gas had exploded at about 9 a.m.
