A 24-year-old Bay Area man was in custody on suspicion of battering someone at a Carlsbad gas station and running from police.
Raymond Hackett of Antioch, who was arrested late Wednesday, is also suspected of resisting arrest, according to Carlsbad Police.
Just before 5:30 p.m., officers were called to the gas station on Palomar Airport Road and as the first officer on scene pulled up, he saw Hackett battering the victim, police said in a statement.
“(Hackett) looked at the officer before fleeing on foot with the officer giving chase,” police said, adding other officers arrived and a search of the area by ground and air began.
Hackett was eventually located hiding behind an ice machine at a nearby hotel, police said.
While searching for Hackett, police came across a man believed to be associated with Hackett and learned that man was named in felony arrest warrants. San Diego resident Stephon Ward, 20, was also taken into custody, police said.
Both he and Hackett were booked into the Vista jail.
Police did not immediately release the identity of the victim or the extent of the victim’s injuries.
