A 23-year-old suspected drunken driver was killed when he slammed his speeding compact car into the rear of a big rig on a San Diego freeway, authorities said.

The fatality on northbound Interstate 805 south of Oceanview Boulevard occurred just before 1 a.m. Monday, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The victim, who was driving a maroon 2003 Saturn Ion, was pronounced dead at the scene, the CHP reported in a statement.

“Alcohol is suspected as being a factor in the traffic collision,” the CHP said.

The big rig driver, a 50-year-old Escondido man, was traveling about 55 miles per hour and was not injured, according to the CHP.
