A collision between a sports car and a motorcycle on a coastal road near Batiquitos Lagoon left two men injured Wednesday, one seriously.

The 2003 Honda S2000 and the 2007 Harley-Davidson were both heading north on Carlsbad Boulevard when they crashed into each other for unknown reasons shortly before 1:30 p.m., according to Carlsbad police.

Both vehicles veered to the right off the roadway just north of Avenida Encinas and smashed through several chain-link fences, with the car overturning and coming to rest upside-down, Lt. Mickey Williams said.

The wreck left the 22-year-old motorcyclist with severe injuries and the 47-year-old motorist, the sole occupant of the Honda, with minor to moderate trauma, the lieutenant said. Medics took both men to Scripps Memorial Hospital La Jolla.

The accident forced the closure of the northbound side of the street in the area into the late afternoon.

The cause of the crash was under investigation. Intoxication was not believed to have been a factor, according to Williams.
